Ukraine medical and military drone applications

Overview

Ukraine is expanding the use of unmanned aerial vehicles for critical medical and logistical operations. The Ministry of Health announced an experimental program to use specialized drones to deliver transplant organs, aiming to reduce delivery times for organs with limited viability. These drones, operated by the Cardiology Institute, can cover distances of up to 700 kilometers.

In military applications, the 92nd Assault Brigade, in collaboration with the 30th Separate Mechanized Brigade and the 10th Army Corps, successfully conducted the world’s first documented aerial medical evacuation of a wounded soldier using a heavy drone in a combat zone. The operation, performed near the Kharkiv front, utilized a modified Heavy Shot Ayudag-6 hexacopter manufactured by Gurzuf Defence. Originally designed as a bomber, the drone was retrofitted with a winch and a specialized fastening system to secure the soldier. The rescue was necessitated by intense Russian drone activity and terrain—including mud, shell craters, and minefields—that made traditional ground or robotic evacuations impossible.

Further developments include the rescue of Kostiantyn ‘Magura’ Vlasenko of the 30th Mechanized Brigade. Following injuries sustained in the Kupyansk sector near the Oskil River, Vlasenko was extracted via a specialized heavy bomber drone after ground evacuation attempts failed due to heavy mining and constant Russian drone patrols. New details reveal Vlasenko had been trapped behind Russian lines for approximately 491 days following a Russian drone strike in February. Having survived in isolation by hiding in an abandoned building and relying on drone airdrops for supplies, he suffered severe injuries including frostbite and was forced to perform a self-amputation of his right lower leg to survive. The rescue mission required six months of planning, coordinating electronic warfare, artillery, and specialized drone teams to navigate heavily mined terrain and surveillance.
