Ukrainian prisoner of war treatment and status
Overview
Reports regarding the treatment and status of Ukrainian prisoners of war have emerged from different fronts. In the Donbas region, a Ukrainian lieutenant, Pavlo Oliinyk, reported joining the Maksim Krivonis Battalion—a unit described by Russian media as “Ukrainian volunteer formations” but viewed by experts as controlled by the Russian government—to escape captivity. Oliinyk alleged he was subjected to physical violence, electric shocks, and psychological pressure while in Russian custody.
Separately, the Ukrainian Prosecutor's Office has launched a pre-trial investigation into the alleged execution of prisoners in the Zaporizhzhia region. According to Maksym Kravchuk, spokesperson for the Ukrainian operational-strategic group ‘South’, intercepted radio communications allegedly contained orders for the “immediate liquidation of wounded Ukrainian servicemen.” Investigators are currently analyzing evidence to determine if personnel from the 38th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade were involved in the killings.
