UN Human Rights Council elections
Overview
Kuwait announced its candidacy for re-election to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2027–2029 term. During a speech to the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee, Diplomatic Attaché Omar Al-Saeed stated the bid reaffirms Kuwait’s commitment to an active and constructive role. Al-Saeed emphasized that Council operations should be guided by universality, objectivity, and impartiality, calling for an end to “politicization and double standards” to maintain the Council’s credibility.
On October 13, 2026, the United Nations General Assembly elected 15 members to the Council for the 2027–2029 term via secret ballot. The election was uncontested, as each regional group provided a “clean slate” of candidates matching the required number of seats. The elected nations include Burundi, Ghana, Nigeria, and Zambia; Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, and Nepal; Brazil, Dominican Republic, and Uruguay; Germany and Ireland; and Moldova and Ukraine.
This marks the second consecutive year of uncontested races. Human Rights Watch criticized the lack of competition in the process. Louis Charbonneau, the United Nations director at the organization, stated that the uncompetitive nature of the election “makes a mockery of the word ‘election’” and noted that it prevents member states from rejecting candidates with poor human rights records. Critics expressed concern that these arrangements allow nations to secure positions on the 47-member council without sufficient international scrutiny.
