Unauthorized art display at the Louvre Museum

Overview

Two German artists were arrested at the Louvre Museum in Paris after using adhesive tape to hang two of their own paintings on a wall in the Salle des États, the room housing the ‘Mona Lisa’. The artworks, which depicted one man in armor and a portrait of the two men with a woman, were approximately 12 by 9 inches in size.

Museum security intercepted the individuals and notified local police. The suspects reportedly described the act as a “joke” or a prank carried out “for enjoyment.” While the ‘Mona Lisa’ was not damaged, officials reported minor damage to the museum wall where the canvases were attached. The individuals are expected to face legal proceedings following a formal complaint from the museum and an assessment of the damage.
