Unauthorized demonstrations in Bern

Overview

In early October 2026, Bern police prepared for an unauthorized demonstration scheduled for October 11, anticipating road closures and traffic disruptions due to multiple assembly points.

By the night of October 17 to October 18, an unauthorized spontaneous demonstration in Bern escalated into violent clashes with police. Protesters, some wearing masks, used pyrotechnics and threw projectiles at officers. In response to demonstrators removing barrier tape and advancing toward police at Känzeli, authorities deployed rubber pellets and rubber bullets.

Confrontations occurred at Schützenmatte, Henkerbrünnli, and Känzeli, lasting until approximately 3:40 AM. While several streets were closed for several hours, no injuries were reported. The Bern Cantonal Police have initiated investigations into the unrest.
