In Belluno, Italy, police recovered ~~4,000 euros~~ cash after an Iraqi refugee was observed scattering 50-euro banknotes along Via Tiziano Vecellio during rush hour. Authorities confirmed the 80 notes were authentic, despite initial suspicions from motorists that the currency might be counterfeit. The individual, who has lived in Belluno since 2022, could not provide clear information regarding the origin of the funds due to communication difficulties. Because no reports of theft or lost property were filed, and the money remained unclaimed after being held for several days, the funds were ultimately handed over to the Municipality of Belluno. In a subsequent incident near the Belluno train station, a homeless man identified as Haider, an Iraqi national known to local social services, distributed 50-euro notes to passersby after finding a briefcase filled with cash. Local police intervened and recovered a total of 4,390 euros. While some pedestrians accepted the cash, others alerted law enforcement. Haider, who resides in a tent near the station, was unable or unwilling to explain the source of the briefcase during questioning. Marco Dal Pont, the City Councilor for Social Affairs, noted that Haider is a well-known figure in the community who has previously declined various offers of housing and food assistance. The funds are currently being held by the Belluno City Council as authorities investigate the origin of the money.
