Following this incident, health experts in Greece have issued warnings regarding a trend of rising underage alcohol consumption. Medical professionals report that the age of onset is decreasing, with children as young as 12 to 14 years old engaging in alcohol use. Data from the Agios Georgios General Hospital of Chania supports these concerns, noting that nine children approximately 14 years old were hospitalized for alcohol-related issues during July and August. New data from the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees (POEDHN) indicates a significant surge in these incidents. In 2025, 1,000 minors under the age of 16 sought medical attention due to alcohol consumption, a trend that has intensified in the first half of 2026 with 650 cases of acute intoxication already recorded.
