Underage alcohol consumption trends in Greece

In Alexandroupoli, a 16-year-old girl was hospitalized after consuming excessive amounts of alcohol in a port dry zone. Her 48-year-old mother was briefly detained on charges of exposing a minor to danger, though she was later released. While unverified media reports suggested the teenager had died, the family confirmed she remained in good health.

Following this incident, health experts in Greece have issued warnings regarding a trend of rising underage alcohol consumption. Medical professionals report that the age of onset is decreasing, with children as young as 12 to 14 years old engaging in alcohol use. Data from the Agios Georgios General Hospital of Chania supports these concerns, noting that nine children approximately 14 years old were hospitalized for alcohol-related issues during July and August.

New data from the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees (POEDHN) indicates a significant surge in these incidents. In 2025, 1,000 minors under the age of 16 sought medical attention due to alcohol consumption, a trend that has intensified in the first half of 2026 with 650 cases of acute intoxication already recorded. Major pediatric hospitals in Athens, including ‘Agia Sofia’ and ‘P. & A. Kyriakou’, have managed hundreds of cases, some requiring intensive care.

Medical professionals have raised suspicions regarding adulterated beverages after children reported severe reactions to small amounts of alcohol. Additionally, concerns have emerged regarding the conduct of certain entertainment venues that allegedly leave unconscious minors on sidewalks to avoid legal consequences. Psychologist Chrysoula Mavraki noted that peer pressure and adult modeling continue to drive the decreasing age of first contact with alcohol.
