UNLP social food production initiatives
Overview
The Universidad Nacional de La Plata (UNLP) is expanding its role in social food production through its Plant for Food Integration Social (PAIS). Initially, the university entered discussions with the Balcarce municipality to draft a cooperation agreement aimed at processing locally grown potatoes into high-nutrient dehydrated foods for community kitchens and municipal assistance programs.
This initiative has since scaled to a provincial level, with UNLP partnering with the Buenos Aires Ministry of Community Development. The collaboration seeks to integrate the university’s productive capacity into provincial social policies. The PAIS facility, utilizing domestic industrial equipment, has a capacity to produce up to 150,000 rations per day. The process involves dehydrating up to three tons of fresh vegetables daily to create various products, including rice and vegetable stew, lentil stew, and fruit salad, to serve vulnerable sectors of society.
