Unofficial Grand Theft Auto V web browser port
Overview
An unofficial project emerged attempting to run Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) directly within web browsers as a proof of concept. The project utilized WebAssembly and leaked source code to allow users to load essential files and engage in gameplay, including controlling characters like Franklin.
Technical performance was inconsistent; while Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge successfully loaded the map and files, Firefox failed during the initial loading process. Users on Linux reported high RAM consumption of approximately 4.5 GB, while Android devices were unable to display the game.
The initiative, which operated via the domain playgta5.com, was shut down within six hours of its appearance following a DMCA claim by Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games.
