Unrelated regional death investigations

Overview

The provided reports cover two distinct and unrelated incidents involving deaths in different countries. In Slovenia, police in the Postojna region are investigating the death of a 74-year-old woman in Malo Ubeljsko. Authorities responded to reports of smoke at a family home, where the woman was discovered in a garage. While unofficial reports suggest a possible family tragedy involving her son, the Koper Police Administration is awaiting autopsy results to determine the exact cause of death.

In Kosovo, an investigation is underway following the murder of 49-year-old Arlinda Sylaj Zekaj in Vitomiricë, Peja. Preliminary findings indicate she died from blunt force trauma, allegedly from being struck with a blunt object, suspected to be a machete, in her bedroom. Her brother-in-law, Albert Sylaj, is the primary suspect and remains at large. Her former husband, Jeton Sylaj, was detained for 48 hours for questioning regarding a separate charge of threats.

The tragedy occurred shortly after Zekaj had reported domestic violence to the police. Although she was interviewed by investigators and returned home via a police patrol at approximately 20:58, she was found dead just ten minutes later. Zekaj had submitted an urgent letter to the Chief Prosecutor in Peja on October 22, expressing fear for her life and criticizing state institutions for failing to execute judicial decisions and protect her. In that letter, she stated, ‘I hope the day does not come when you and the responsible institutions are forced to give an account only after my life has been taken.’

Following the killing, Prime Minister Albin Kurti demanded reports from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Justice within 72 hours. The Kosovo Police Inspectorate (IPK) has also launched an investigation to verify how police handled Zekaj’s previous reports of violence.
