Uruguay agricultural development and innovation

Overview

Uruguay is advancing strategic initiatives to modernize and support its agricultural and livestock sectors through institutional coordination and infrastructure development.

Initial efforts focused on the Uruguay Innova program, which organized a seminar to align science, technology, and innovation with private investment. This coordination involves multiple agencies, including the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INIA) and the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP), to boost productivity and quality.

Subsequent government updates highlighted specific measures to address climate threats and resource management. These include the development of a National Irrigation Strategy, with feasibility studies underway for projects in the San Salvador river basin and Treinta y Tres, supported by tax benefits for multi-farm irrigation. Additionally, the government is pursuing land colonization goals, aiming to allocate 25,000 hectares for agricultural use.
