US agricultural diesel cost relief measures
Overview
Agricultural producers in Nebraska and Illinois are receiving state-level relief to combat rising diesel fuel costs and shortages.
In Nebraska, Governor Jim Pillen issued executive orders allowing highway-registered vehicles to use untaxed, dyed diesel without penalty and permitting farmers to seek refunds for diesel taxes paid. The orders also ease weight restrictions for vehicles transporting livestock and crops by up to 25%. Additionally, the Governor requested that the U.S. President implement a 90-day pause on diesel exports to rebuild domestic reserves.
In Illinois, Governor JB Pritzker issued a disaster proclamation and an executive order to address similar pressures. The state will not impose penalties for using dyed diesel on highways for farming purposes through the end of 2026. State officials are also considering extending the Illinois Harvest Permit program into 2027 to mitigate the impact of diesel prices, which have reportedly risen from an average of $3.75 to over $6.60 per gallon in some areas.
