US airline technical malfunctions and flight diversions
Overview
A series of technical malfunctions led to multiple emergency flight diversions involving major US carriers in early October 2026.
On October 5, an American Airlines Boeing 737-800 returning to Boston from Chicago after a suspected fuel leak in the right engine. On October 6, an American Airlines Boeing 777 traveling from Madrid to Dallas diverted to New York-JFK after six of its eight toilets became inoperable.
Following these incidents, a United Airlines Boeing 767-300ER traveling from Washington Dulles to Amsterdam diverted to St. John's, Canada, after reporting an engine issue over the Atlantic Ocean. The crew issued an emergency code (7700) approximately four hours into the flight. No injuries were reported in any of these instances.
