Overview

The United States and China are engaged in negotiations to reduce trade tariffs on approximately $30 billion worth of goods. As part of these efforts, China has reportedly fulfilled more than half of its commitment to purchase American soybeans. The negotiations are occurring ahead of a scheduled summit between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping, which could result in an extension of a one-year trade truce.

Parallel to these trade discussions, the United States is managing energy security concerns as its Strategic Petroleum Reserve has fallen below 290 million barrels, representing only 40% coverage. While the administration has expressed interest in replenishing these stocks using oil from Venezuela, high oil prices and regional instability in Saudi Arabia and Iran present potential complications.
