US counterterrorism operations against Al-Shabaab

Overview

The United States has maintained active counterterrorism operations against Al-Shabaab in Somalia. Early in September, U.S. airstrikes were conducted near Mogadishu and Kismayo in coordination with Somali security forces to limit the group’s ability to threaten international interests.

By mid-September, these operations expanded to include strikes against a facility near Saacou in southern Somalia and a weapons and ammunition depot in the Al-Madow area of the Golis mountain range in northern Somalia. These strikes, conducted in coordination with the Somali federal government and Puntland authorities, aimed to disrupt the Al-Qaeda-linked group’s logistical capabilities and ability to execute attacks.
