US-Cuba economic sanctions dispute

Tensions regarding United States economic sanctions against Cuba have escalated, drawing criticism from both domestic labor organizations and international leaders.

In early August, the North Dakota AFL-CIO passed a resolution rejecting unilateral coercive measures and calling for the revocation of Executive Order 14380. The organization urged the U.S. government to end the blockade and remove Cuba from the State Sponsors of Terrorism list. During this period, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel highlighted a severe energy crisis, noting that an oil embargo has contributed to multiple blackouts and described the economic situation as “humanly unbearable.”

By late August, the diplomatic pressure expanded as Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah called for the unconditional lifting of the embargo, stating that such measures are incompatible with United Nations principles. Cuban Ambassador to the UN Ernesto Soberón Guzmán added that sanctions obstruct private investment and cause fuel and electricity shortages. Meanwhile, the United States has continued to implement new economic penalties targeting Cuban state-owned mining, metal, and construction companies, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicating that further sanctions would be announced to close off government mechanisms.
