US extradition request for Apollo Quiboloy
Overview
The United States has formally requested the extradition of Apollo Quiboloy, founder of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, to face a 2021 federal indictment involving child sex trafficking, fraud, and bulk-cash smuggling.
The Philippine Department of Justice (DOJ) is currently evaluating the request to ensure compliance with the 1994 US-Philippines extradition treaty. Justice Undersecretary Raul Vasquez noted that the evaluation of the voluminous documentation could take between one week and one month before the DOJ decides whether to file a petition with a Regional Trial Court. Representative Leila De Lima has called for the extradition to proceed without delay, emphasizing the need for accountability for victims.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is expected to announce a decision regarding the request within a few weeks. Palace Press Officer Claire Castro stated that the President has been informed and intends to study the matter thoroughly.
Under the existing treaty, the Philippine government faces several options: it may hold the request to allow Quiboloy to face pending local cases—including qualified human trafficking in Pasig and sexual abuse in Quezon City—or it could temporarily suspend local proceedings to allow for his extradition to the US. The DOJ has indicated it will prioritize the matter while ensuring local criminal cases are factored into the final determination. Quiboloy, who denies all allegations, remains detained in the Philippines.
