US federal immigration enforcement actions

Overview

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has conducted several enforcement actions in Virginia and California, highlighting tensions between federal authorities and local jurisdictions regarding sanctuary policies.

In Virginia, ICE issued detainers and removal warrants for non-citizens facing criminal charges in Loudoun and Fairfax counties. The situation in Fairfax County drew criticism from Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin after local officials released a suspect facing aggravated sexual battery charges despite an active ICE detainer. This occurred despite opposition to federal immigration enforcement from Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger.

In California, reports emerged of separate detention incidents. At Los Angeles International Airport, footage showed plainclothes agents detaining a Chinese national. In Thermal, witnesses reported that agents handcuffed a 14-year-old male in a mobile home park following an incident where a vehicle was allegedly rammed. While the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office stated they had no record of personnel at the park, ICE has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the Thermal incident.
