U.S. government influencer disclosure controversy

A controversy has emerged regarding the U.S. government’s use of social media influencers to disseminate information. Reports indicate that the Department of State and the Pentagon were involved in a situation where influencer Jennica Pounds, known online as @DataRepublican, was provided with information concerning Cuba intended for social media leaks.

While the U.S. government acknowledged an attempted leak that did not materialize, a high-ranking official characterized the material as a ‘nothingburger.’ The incident has prompted criticism concerning the use of public funds to hire influencers and the potential for such individuals to be used to spread political narratives.

The Department of Defense has since confirmed that Pounds has served as a Special Government Employee since July 2026. The matter became public following a dispute between Pounds and State Department Undersecretary Sarah Rogers, during which Pounds accused Rogers of attempting to ‘entrap’ her after being provided access to Biden-era documents. While the lack of disclosure regarding her government affiliation has raised questions about media ethics and transparency, there is currently no public evidence that Pounds violated federal law.
