US-Iran conflict and evolving mediation efforts

Overview

Pakistan’s role as an “honest broker” between the United States and Iran has come under intense scrutiny. While Islamabad previously sought to prevent regional war by urging Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian officials and lawmakers have expressed public skepticism regarding Pakistan’s neutrality. This skepticism stems from Pakistan’s recent involvement in the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement with Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

Diplomatic efforts have intensified as Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, conducted his fifth visit to Tehran this year to facilitate high-level talks. Accompanied by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Munir met with President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, and National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei. During these meetings, Iranian leadership maintained a firm stance, asserting that the United States must fulfill seven specific conditions to regain Tehran’s trust, including lifting oil export sanctions and ending port blockades. Rezaei reiterated that all enriched nuclear materials will remain within Iran as a “national asset.”

Mediation efforts are expanding to include Russia and Qatar, following a visit to Tehran by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. However, these diplomatic moves coincide with escalating military risks. Reports indicate that US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has discussed the removal of the Iranian regime with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with some suggesting the Trump administration may authorize strikes against nuclear facilities like the Jabal al-Fas site. Meanwhile, maritime tensions persist in the Strait of Hormuz, and US officials report a significant decline in Iranian oil loading at Kharg Island due to ongoing blockades.
