US-Iran military and nuclear conflict

Overview

The conflict between the United States and Iran has escalated through military strikes and diplomatic ultimatums. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has warned of long-term environmental damage, or ‘ecocide,’ resulting from US and Israeli strikes on Iran’s energy and oil infrastructure, noting that the destruction of ecosystems and contamination of resources could persist for decades.

As tensions continue, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth issued an ultimatum, stating that Iran must choose between abandoning its nuclear ambitions or facing ‘devastating military action.’ While the US has suggested a potential end to military involvement if Tehran guarantees it will not acquire nuclear weapons, Iran has refused to move enriched uranium stockpiles out of the country, labeling them ‘national wealth.’

In response to potential further strikes, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard has threatened to target undersea internet cables and US investments in the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, Israeli leadership has expressed a commitment to ‘bringing down the terrorist regime in Iran.’
