Overview

The history of lunar exploration is defined by the Cold War space race and technological advancements aimed at landing humans on the Moon. A key component of this effort was NASA’s Lunar Orbiter 1 mission, launched in August 1966.

As part of a five-mission program, the 385-kilogram spacecraft was designed to map the lunar surface to identify safe landing sites for the Apollo missions. The mission achieved a significant milestone on August 23, 1966, when it captured the first photograph of Earth from the vicinity of the Moon. To ensure high resolution, the spacecraft utilized a specialized system where film was developed onboard and then scanned for transmission to Earth. In 2008, NASA released a digitally restored version of this original image.
