Overview

Since the beginning of President Donald Trump’s second term in January 2025, the U.S. Department of State has revoked more than 175,000 visas. The department stated these actions target foreign nationals who have committed crimes, defrauded Americans, violated visa terms, or posed national security risks.

Common reasons for revocation include law enforcement encounters involving theft, drug offenses, assault, and driving under the influence, as well as sexual assault, child abuse, and embezzlement. Officials also highlighted the revocation of over 100 visas in North Africa related to ‘birth tourism’ intended to secure citizenship for children.

Additionally, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has overseen revocations based on foreign policy grounds, including actions against individuals linked to influence operations from Cuba or connections to the Iranian regime. The department emphasized that a U.S. visa is ‘a privilege, not a right.’
