US migration policy and United Nations disputes

Overview

Allegations emerged that the United Nations used taxpayer funds to facilitate mass migration at the US-Mexico border. Reports suggested certain UN agencies collaborated with non-profit organizations to distribute cash vouchers and debit cards to individuals. In response, 21 lawmakers proposed H.R. 6155 to restrict US funding to the organization.

Subsequently, UN human rights experts denounced a US migration outsourcing scheme that has resulted in the expulsion of approximately 23,000 migrants to third countries. A group of 23 rapporteurs, led by Gehad Madi, warned that these agreements involving at least 35 nations violate the principle of non-refoulement and expose migrants to risks of torture and persecution. The experts called for the immediate suspension of these agreements to restore access to fair asylum procedures.

In a related development, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced it will reduce the timeframe for refugees to contest the removal of their status from thirty days to ten days. The DHS stated this measure aims to ‘restore system integrity and prevent fraud,’ while advocacy groups such as the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) warn the change will facilitate mass deportations.
