U.S. military involvement in Iran and Russian response
Overview
U.S. intelligence reports suggest that Russian President Vladimir Putin perceives the United States as strategically weakened by its military involvement in the war against Iran. This perceived weakness is linked to the depletion of critical U.S. military stockpiles, including Patriot air defense systems, Tomahawk cruise missiles, ATACMS tactical missiles, and approximately one-quarter of Reaper-type unmanned aerial vehicles. Experts indicate that replenishing these munitions could take up to six years. In response, CIA Director John Ratcliffe conducted a secret mission to Moscow to meet with senior Russian intelligence officials, warning that intensifying the war in Ukraine could lead to harmful consequences for Russia. Following this visit, the Kremlin rejected proposals for a trilateral summit between Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stating such a meeting would only be meaningful if a peace treaty were ready for signature. As the conflict continues, U.S. forces have conducted air raids on Iranian launch sites on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. Centcom spokesperson Tim Hawkins stated these strikes targeted sites where Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps members were observed preparing rockets loaded with sea mines. While President Trump has denied shortages of munitions, high-ranking military leaders have warned Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that a prolonged campaign is unsustainable. The Pentagon has disputed reports suggesting internal military concerns, stating parts of the reports are ‘simply wrong.’ The 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, from August 31 to September 1, 2026, marked the organization’s 25th anniversary. Leaders from China, Russia, India, Iran, and Pakistan discussed regional security and economic cooperation, resulting in the adoption of 28 documents. Key developments included the approval of regulations for a Universal Center for Countering Security Challenges and Threats of SCO Member States in Bishkek and progress toward implementing an SCO Development Bank.
