US Navy SM-6 missile production contract
Overview
The US Navy has awarded Raytheon a multiyear contract valued at up to $24.4 billion to accelerate the production of Standard Missile-6 (SM-6) interceptors. The agreement covers five years, with two additional option years, and is designed to bolster defense reserves and increase manufacturing throughput.
The SM-6 is a multi-mission weapon used for anti-air, anti-surface, and ballistic missile defense, capable of intercepting aerodynamic, ballistic, and hypersonic targets. To meet rising demand and replenish stockpiles, the US intends to increase annual production from approximately 125 units to 500 units per year within seven years. Raytheon is utilizing automation and workforce expansion to support this increased scale.
