US nuclear loan program and capacity expansion plans
Overview
In late June 2026 the U.S. Department of Energy announced a $17.5 billion low‑interest loan package to fund ten Westinghouse AP1000 reactors, each about 1.1 GW. The financing is organized through five special‑purpose vehicles that each require roughly $1 billion of private equity and will secure long‑lead components such as pressure vessels and steam generators. Seven utilities and energy firms have submitted letters of intent; the agency expects to select five sites (two reactors per site) by year‑end, with construction beginning around 2030 and operation in the mid‑2030s to serve AI‑driven data centres, cryptocurrency mining and large‑scale cloud providers.
On 7 July 2026 the DOE added Aalo Atomics’ Aalo‑X Critical Test Reactor as the fourth advanced reactor in its Reactor Pilot Program, highlighting streamlined permitting and federal support as accelerators for domestic nuclear development.
A July 17 briefing expanded the timeline, projecting that the United States could add 100–300 GW of nuclear capacity by 2050—requiring $105–$170 billion of investment—to meet growing demand from data‑intensive workloads. The broader strategy aims to quadruple U.S. nuclear capacity within 25 years, reinforce the nuclear supply chain, and maintain energy security while limiting taxpayer risk. The plan is positioned as a counter‑balance to rapid nuclear growth in China and aligns with similar North‑American initiatives.
