US-Pakistan educational exchange cooperation

Overview

Educational cooperation between the United States and Pakistan has expanded through new institutional agreements and scholarship opportunities.

In August 2026, the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) and Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission (HEC) signed a five-year agreement to strengthen higher education, research, and professional development. The partnership focuses on sectors such as science, technology, security, and economic growth, building on decades of cooperation including the Fulbright scholarship program.

Following this, in September 2026, the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan opened applications for the Spring 2027 Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) program. This initiative provides fully funded opportunities for Pakistani high school students to live with American host families and attend U.S. high schools to foster leadership and cultural exchange.
