US-Peru bilateral cooperation expansion

Overview

The United States and Peru have moved to deepen bilateral cooperation across several strategic sectors. US Ambassador Bernie Navarro announced a memorandum of understanding regarding artificial intelligence to improve Peru’s digital infrastructure, regulatory frameworks, and workforce training.

In terms of security, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed Peru’s inclusion in the ‘Shield of the Americas’ to coordinate responses to transnational threats like organized crime and narcotics trafficking. Additionally, Rubio designated Peru as an important non-NATO ally.

Economic cooperation has also expanded through the mining sector. Following a memorandum of understanding on critical minerals, the US International Development Finance Corporation has allocated US$5 million to Peru’s mining industry to support economic activity and fiscal revenue.
