In late July 2026, Australian Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy reversed an earlier statement that the U.S. submarine rotation at HMAS Stirling would end when Australia’s own Virginia-class submarines arrive in 2032, saying the United States could continue operating submarines from the Perth base on an indefinite basis, though not as a permanent base.

By mid-August, Pentagon Undersecretary for Policy Elbridge Colby described the HMAS Stirling facility as “tremendously important” and a key value for both nations. Colby noted that the U.S. has been “very clear in private” with Australia regarding AUKUS expectations and emphasized that the administration maintains a “very tight discussion and a very clear understanding” with Australia to ensure stable and realistic expectations for the partnership.
