Overview
The United States has restructured its visa operations in Nigeria as part of a broader Department of State initiative to consolidate routine services into regional hubs across Africa. This realignment aims to improve efficiency and strengthen national security through uniform screening and adjudication standards.
Effective August 1, 2026, routine immigrant and non-immigrant visa services—including tourist, business, family-preference, and employment-based categories—were transferred from the U.S. Embassy in Abuja to the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos. While the Abuja embassy remains open, it has ceased routine processing and now maintains only diplomatic and official visa services (categories A, G, and C).
Applicants with valid, unused visa application fee receipts may use them to schedule appointments in Lagos. For diplomatic and official visas, the Abuja embassy requires a diplomatic note or note verbale, a DS-160 confirmation, and a diplomatic or official passport.
