Ushuaia dance groups preparing for national championship

In August 2026, Ushuaia Mayor Walter Vuoto met with local dance groups to discuss their upcoming representation of Tierra del Fuego at the National Female Malambo Championship in Tanti, Córdoba, scheduled for October.

Initially, the Mayor received the workshop ‘Folklore en Zapatillas’, led by teachers Melisa Renko and Jonathan Ramos, following their success at the provincial Malambo competition in Tolhuin. The group expressed they were “very happy to be received” and to have the opportunity to compete nationally.

Later in the month, the Mayor also met with the Virago Malambo dance company. Directed by Franco Vacaflor, the group earned their place in the national championship after securing second place in the Major Malambo Group category and first place in the Adult Soloist category during the July 25 provincial qualifiers. The Municipality of Ushuaia has pledged support to the company to help promote Fuegian culture.

Further developments in the province include the recognition of dancer Julieta Ailén Cortés Molina. A student at the National University of the Arts, Cortés Molina has been granted a Declaration of Municipal Interest in Tolhuin after securing second place in the Provincial Female Malambo Selection for the second consecutive year. She is also set to represent the province at the national championship in Córdoba.

By late August, regional reports confirmed that both the Virago Malambo company and dancer Julieta Cortés continue their preparations to represent Tierra del Fuego at the upcoming national championship.
