The U.S. House has passed the $1.15 trillion FY 2027 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which includes a proposal to rename the Department of Defense the “Department of War.” As the bill moves to the Senate, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth testified that failing to approve the Pentagon’s $1.5 trillion budget request would be the “greatest threat” to U.S. security. Controversy persists over Section 219, the United States–Israel Defense Technology Cooperation Initiative. The provision directs the Pentagon to appoint an executive agent to coordinate bilateral research, development, and industrial cooperation with Israel. While the provision outlines a framework for cooperation rather than a formal merger of command structures, it has drawn intense criticism. High-profile figures, including Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, as well as commentators Tucker Carlson and Cenk Uygur, have characterized the measure as an “existential threat” to American sovereignty. Other critics, such as Tara Reade and Stew Peters, have expressed concerns that the initiative could lead to increased U.S. involvement in foreign wars and allow Israeli interests to exert undue influence over U.S. military operations. ~~The Senate continues~~ Recently, a coalition of 56 human rights and civil liberties organizations, including Amnesty International USA and the National Lawyers Guild, urged Congress to ~~deliberate~~ strike the ~~budget and~~ provision from the ~~implications of this deepened military integration.~~ NDAA.
