US‑Israel defense integration in NDAA
Overview
The fiscal 2027 National Defense Authorization Act, a $1.15 trillion defense package, advanced through Congress amid partisan concern over its cost and a contentious U.S.–Israel technology partnership. On 22 July the House passed the bill 216‑212, with the vast majority of Republicans in favor and almost all Democrats opposed, citing the $37.5 billion war in Iran, the Save America voter‑ID provision, and the expansion of joint military‑technology work with Israel (Section 219/1217). The vote broke a decades‑long tradition of bipartisan NDAA passage, underscoring deep partisan divisions. The legislation also retains the proposal to rename the Department of Defense the “Department of War,” provides a 5‑7 % pay raise for service members, and attaches the SAVE America Act. Critics such as Rep. Thomas Massie, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez and former Rep. Dennis Kucinich warned that permanent integration could erode U.S. sovereignty and intelligence safeguards. The bill now moves to the Senate, where uncertainty remains over the attached voting‑law measure and overall passage.
