Utility worker impersonation fraud in Greece
Overview
In late September and early October 2026, Greek authorities in Trikala and Larissa intercepted fraudulent schemes involving individuals impersonating utility workers.
In Trikala, police arrested four suspects after an attempted electricity leak scam. The group allegedly instructed a resident to leave valuables outside his home for collection. Following a high-speed chase that ended at the Longou Trikala tolls, authorities seized cash, mobile phones, and a vehicle. The suspects face charges of attempted fraud and forming a criminal gang.
In Larissa, a similar incident occurred where suspects impersonated a utility worker to target an elderly woman. On October 4, details emerged regarding two suspects, aged 27 and 31, who allegedly posed as employees of the electricity distribution company, DEDDIE. They attempted to convince a woman to leave money and jewelry outside her home under the pretext of addressing high voltage issues.
The attempt was thwarted when a neighbor alerted authorities. During the subsequent intervention, the suspects fled on a motorcycle, driving against traffic in a one-way street and attempting to ram a police vehicle. The chase ended when the motorcycle crashed into a wall. The men reportedly resisted arrest by physically assaulting officers.
Beyond the utility impersonation, reports indicate the group may have previously defrauded another woman by posing as police officers to steal 760 euros and jewelry. The suspects face multiple charges, including the formation of a criminal organization, fraud, disobedience, violence against officials, and dangerous driving.
