UP Congress leadership transition and internal unrest

Following a leadership reshuffle within the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC), former president Ajay Rai pledged his continued loyalty to Rahul Gandhi, describing himself as a ‘Hanuman’ to Gandhi.

Tensions escalated during the swearing-in ceremony for the new leadership in Lucknow, which included incoming State President Aradhana Misra ‘Mona’ and Working President Imran Masood. A physical clash erupted at the UPCC headquarters between supporters of Ajay Rai and Avadh Zone President Mamta Chaudhary. Witnesses reported verbal abuse, pushing, shoving, and physical altercations, with some reports indicating that footwear was thrown during the dispute.

Ajay Rai, alleging he was mistreated, demanded the immediate expulsion of Mamta Chaudhary, claiming such ‘indiscipline damages the organization’s image.’ Mamta Chaudhary has countered these allegations, accusing Rai of exhibiting ‘anti-Dalit sentiments and aggressive behavior toward women’ during the incident. She stated her intention to raise the matter with senior leadership, including Rahul Gandhi. Senior leaders, including Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari and Imran Masood, intervened to restore order.

In the aftermath of the clash, speculation regarding Rai’s political future has intensified. After the incident, Rai retreated to his residence in Varanasi and has maintained a low profile. While rumors have circulated suggesting a potential move to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Samajwadi Party (SP), or the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), reports indicate that Rai intends to remain with the Congress. He is reportedly focusing on grassroots strengthening and preparing to contest the upcoming Assembly elections from the Pindra constituency in Varanasi.

Separately, Rai raised concerns regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Uttar Pradesh, alleging that the names of vulnerable residents in slum settlements are being removed.
