Uttar Pradesh political dispute over Ayodhya constituency
Overview
Political tensions have intensified in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 assembly elections due to a public exchange between Samajwadi Party (SP) President Akhilesh Yadav and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath regarding the Ayodhya constituency. Initially, Akhilesh Yadav challenged Adityanath to contest the upcoming elections from Ayodhya, suggesting that the Chief Minister should do so if the BJP is confident in its position. Yadav noted that the SP had already named Pawan Pandey as its candidate for the seat and asserted that the INDIA alliance would defeat the BJP in the upcoming state elections. In response, Yogi Adityanath issued a counter-challenge, urging Yadav to also file his nomination from Ayodhya. During a public meeting in Balrampur, Adityanath stated, “Akhilesh, Ayodhya is our holy abode. We go to Ayodhya for development, not for politics,” while affirming that he would also contest from that seat. Expanding on this confrontation, Adityanath invited Yadav to a direct contest, stating, “I invite you to file your nomination from Ayodhya. I will also try my luck there once. The fight should be face-to-face.” He further accused the SP of being “rattled” and criticized their previous record on law and order. Akhilesh Yadav dismissed the Chief Minister’s stance via social media, suggesting that a “gust of wind” would sweep away political arrogance. He cited the SP’s performance in the Faizabad seat during the Lok Sabha elections and claimed voters would hold the administration accountable for local issues. Adding to the pressure, Uttar Pradesh ministers Om Prakash Rajbhar and Daya Shankar Singh have also urged Yadav to accept the challenge to prove his political strength.
