Uttar Pradesh teacher recruitment protests

Teacher recruitment candidates in Uttar Pradesh have engaged in escalating protests regarding various administrative and regulatory disputes.

In Lucknow, candidates involved in a 68,500-teacher recruitment process protested near the residence of the Deputy Chief Minister. They demanded the implementation of an order from the State Commission for Backward Classes to address a perceived reservation scam and revise recruitment results for OBC candidates. Police intervened to relocate the demonstrators.

In Prayagraj, protests regarding Trained Graduate Teacher (TGT) and Post Graduate Teacher (PGT) recruitment have intensified. Candidates are opposing new rules from the Education Service Selection Commission, specifically a requirement for a minimum of 50 percent marks in graduation. Protesters claim this change could disqualify between 700,000 and 800,000 applicants. The demonstration has included hunger strikes and follows the reported death of a candidate due to stress. While students claim to have received verbal assurances from the Chief Minister, they are demanding written guarantees, leading to heavy security presence at the Directorate of Education.
