Uttarakhand energy procurement and supply
Overview
The Uttarakhand government has moved to secure its energy supply through both long-term procurement and short-term central allocations.
To ensure long-term energy security, the state has defended a 25-year agreement to procure 1,320 MW of thermal power. Officials stated the coal-based power will be secured at Rs 5.74 per unit through a competitive bidding process approved by the Uttarakhand Electricity Regulatory Commission. The government noted that this thermal power will provide a stable base-load to complement hydropower and solar energy, while the project's location outside the state will avoid local land and pollution issues.
To address immediate seasonal needs, the central government approved an additional 73 MW of electricity for Uttarakhand to meet increased demand during the winter months. This allocation, effective from October 1, 2026, through March 2027, will be sourced from the unallocated pool of central sector power generation stations.
