The strategic partnership between India and Uzbekistan has deepened through high-level diplomatic engagements. Following the August 2026 visit of Uzbek Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov to New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted a state visit to Tashkent. During this visit, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev conferred upon Modi the ‘Oliy Darajali Do’stlik’, Uzbekistan’s highest honor for foreign leaders. Central to the discussions was the elevation of bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. A critical outcome was the establishment of a framework for the long-term supply of uranium from Uzbekistan to support India’s civil-nuclear energy sector. The leaders also set an ambitious target to increase annual bilateral trade from $1 billion to $5 billion by 2030, with expanded cooperation in artificial intelligence, digital public infrastructure, outer space exploration, critical minerals, and regional transport logistics. To further boost tourism and cultural ties, Uzbekistan announced visa-free entry for Indian citizens for stays of up to 30 days. The two nations also committed to preserving Buddhist heritage sites and promoting the Hindi language through scholarships. Following the Uzbekistan leg, Modi traveled to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to participate in the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) ~~Summit.~~ Summit, which marks the organization's 25th anniversary. On the sidelines of the summit, Modi held high-level bilateral meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. In discussions with Putin, Modi addressed the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership, covering trade, energy, and defense, while reiterating support for peaceful resolutions to the Ukraine conflict, noting that “every day of war pushes humanity backward.” In talks with President Pezeshkian, Modi focused on diversifying trade and addressing regional tensions in West Asia, advocating for dialogue and the protection of freedom of navigation. Pezeshkian expressed appreciation for India’s cooperation and criticized the United States for prioritizing force over diplomatic mechanisms.
