In late July 2026 Uzbekistan’s foreign minister announced a four‑day visit to India scheduled for 2–5 August, with meetings planned with President Droupadi Murmu, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and a business forum in Delhi. The visit began on 3 August, when the minister arrived in New Delhi and was welcomed by officials. High‑level talks focused on expanding trade, investment, energy and technology cooperation; bilateral trade in 2023 was about USD 756.6 million, below its potential. During the visit, Jaishankar and Uzbek Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov highlighted the steady momentum of the partnership and discussed cooperation on terrorism, drug trafficking and multilateral forums such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal announced a goal to double bilateral trade, currently around USD 1 billion, within three years and signaled interest in a free‑trade agreement. Opportunities were identified in mining, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, information technology and digital infrastructure, with an emphasis on co‑investment and co‑manufacturing under India’s “Connect Central Asia” policy. The talks also expressed support for Uzbekistan’s upcoming chairmanship of the Non‑Aligned Movement. The ministers also reviewed a broader strategic partnership covering energy, infrastructure, defence, education and culture, and praised Uzbekistan’s zero‑tolerance stance on terrorism. Trade was reported at roughly $1 billion and projected to reach $1.5 billion, reinforcing the push to double volumes. India, chairing BRICS in 2026, thanked Uzbekistan for backing BRICS initiatives and pledged support for its 2027‑29 NAM chairmanship. A parliamentary friendship group was created, and thousands of students and professionals from both sides are participating in exchange programmes such as India’s ITEC.
