V Point railway rewards program in Japan
Overview
V Point Marketing, Sumitomo Mitsui Card, and Visa have announced a new rewards service for Japanese railway commuters, scheduled to launch on October 7, 2026. The initiative will begin as a two-year pilot program involving the Keio Line, Tsukuba Express, Yurikamome, and Enoshima Electric Railway.
Through the use of contactless touch payments via Visa-branded cards or smartphones, users can earn “ride points” at a rate of one point for every 200 yen spent. These are intended to be awarded in addition to standard credit card payment points, allowing for a “double dip” of rewards.
The program utilizes the “stera transit” infrastructure. Beyond providing consumer incentives, the companies intend to use the collected data to analyze consumer behavior, encourage off-peak travel, and stimulate local economies by connecting transportation usage with spending at approximately 160,000 V Point partner merchants. A promotional campaign is planned from October 7 to December 30, which may offer ten times the standard ride points.
