Valencia DANA storm judicial investigation
Overview
A judicial investigation is examining the management of the 2024 DANA storm catastrophe in Valencia. Former Generalitat president Carlos Mazón has submitted a legal defense arguing there is no causal link between the timing of the ES-Alert mass notification and the 231 deaths caused by flooding.
Mazón’s legal team contends that the alert, sent at 20:11 hours, would not have altered victim behavior to prevent fatalities. The defense also asserts that responsibility for alert content and prevention measures rested with the regional Interior Minister, Salomé Pradas, rather than Mazón.
In response to the filing, the People's Party (PP) spokesperson in the Valencian Parliament, Nando Pastor, declined to comment on the document, stating the party maintains a policy of silence regarding active judicial proceedings to avoid interfering with the legal process.
