Valencia Montortal Palace museum expansion

Overview

The Valencia City Council announced plans to rehabilitate the historic Baroque Palacio de los Marqueses de Montortal to serve as the second headquarters for the Museu de la Ciutat. This expansion is intended to house the municipal art collection dating from the Renaissance to the mid-19th century, allowing the existing headquarters to focus on more recent works.

Following this announcement, the site acquired its first piece of art: a painting titled ‘Sagrada Familia con San Juanito y Ángeles Músicos’ by José Vergara. The work was purchased for 26,000 euros through the Ministry of Culture exercising its right of first refusal on behalf of the city council. The acquisition, timed to coincide with the 300th anniversary of Vergara’s birth, is part of an effort to promote the legacy of the 18th-century artist.
