Valencian educational inspection reforms

The Valencian regional government implemented a reform requiring educational inspectors to supervise ‘ideological neutrality’ within schools. Effective in August 2026, the measure aims to ensure teaching activities and materials are free from ‘indoctrination’ while respecting pluralism and linguistic rights. The reform includes new channels for the educational community to report potential violations, with inspectors tasked to conduct assessments following complaints.

This policy has faced significant opposition from political parties and labor unions. Critics, including the Compromís party and the STEPV union, have described the move as an attempt to create a ‘political police’ or a ‘witch hunt’ that threatens academic freedom and teaching rights.

As the school year began in September, tensions escalated. Critics expressed concern that new reporting channels could encourage self-censorship among educators. Additionally, the education sector faced administrative challenges, with the CGT union reporting that 23% of educational support staff remained without contracts due to bureaucratic delays, impacting special education and early childhood services.
