Valle dei Templi archaeological excavations
Overview
Archaeological excavations at the Valle dei Templi in Agrigento have yielded findings spanning multiple historical eras. Initial research in the Ceramico area, a collaborative project between the University of Bologna and the Archaeological Park, focused on the archaic and classical periods of ancient Akragas. Notable discoveries included large, well-preserved ceramic production kilns.
Subsequent excavations led by the Scuola Normale Superiore have expanded the site’s historical scope to include Roman and early Christian periods. Researchers uncovered 1st-century BCE frescoes, architectural elements, and a Roman-era home. The findings also reveal the site’s transition through the discovery of a thermal complex and early Christian structures, such as a small basilica and a martirion, situated within former pagan buildings.
