Vampire narratives in media and literature
Overview
Vampire themes continue to manifest across various media, including literature, comics, film, and television. In literature and comics, the genre sees both classic reinterpretations, such as new editions of Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’, and modern reimagining in series like Marvel’s ‘Midnight-X-Men’, which aims to restore elements of horror to the superhero genre.
In film and television, the archetype remains a persistent trend. The genre is currently experiencing a boom in the German-speaking media landscape, with upcoming productions including the film ‘Die Blutgräfin’, starring Isabelle Huppert, and the British-German coming-of-age comedy series ‘The Reluctant Vampire’.
The enduring popularity of these narratives is often linked to the foundational characteristics established by Stoker in his 1897 novel, which was inspired by the historical ruler Vlad III. Cultural scientist Marcus Stiglegger notes that Stoker established the definitive traits of the creature, such as fangs, blood consumption, sleeping in coffins, and allergies to garlic and sunlight.
