Van Gogh painting Sotheby's auction

Overview

Vincent van Gogh’s painting ‘Châtaigniers en fleurs’ (Blooming Chestnuts) is scheduled for auction at Sotheby’s in New York on November 18. Created in May 1890 during the artist’s final months in Auvers-sur-Oise, the work has not been publicly exhibited for over sixty years.

The painting is part of the Blaquier-Arrieta Collection, which includes works by other masters such as Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, and Camille Pissarro. Before its upcoming sale, the piece was exhibited in Hong Kong.

Sotheby’s estimates the painting could fetch approximately $180 million, potentially setting a new auction record for Van Gogh by surpassing the previous record of $117.2 million set in 2022. Including the buyer’s premium, the final price could reach $207 million. Scott Niichel, a vice president at Sotheby’s, described the work as reflecting a period of “extraordinary optimism and color” in the artist’s career.
