Vandalism and restoration of memorial in Bari

Overview

In Bari, authorities and local artists have restored a mural in Parco Maugeri dedicated to Giovanni Falcone and the victims of the Capaci massacre. The artwork, which was originally created in May, had been vandalized with graffiti and drawings on the depicted faces.

The restoration was completed by the Sungre collective, involving artists Gianfranco Susca and Noemi Mastrorillo, in coordination with the Municipality of Bari and the Associazione Nazionale Magistrati (ANM). During the reopening, officials including Nicola Grasso and ANM president Antonella Cafagna emphasized the mural’s importance as a “permanent symbol of civic memory and a stand against illegality.” The rapid response was intended to reaffirm the value of public spaces and encourage respect for communal heritage.
