Vandalism of Bulgarian State Railways trains

Overview

New electric trains operated by Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) have faced repeated vandalism and hygiene issues following their launch in August 2026.

Initial reports highlighted exterior damage, such as spray paint and graffiti, in Pernik and Blagoevgrad. Petar Bunev, chairman of the Railway Workers' Union, noted that new equipment arrived before necessary infrastructure and cleaning technologies were established. He also pointed to budgetary challenges, stating that capital transfers for improving depots and stations were reduced in recent discussions.

Subsequent reports expanded the scope of the issues to include internal hygiene problems, such as food waste, soiled seats, and improper toilet use. Security officials also reported an attempted theft of a glass partition and interior defacement with markers. In response, BDZ Passenger Transport has handed security footage to the Ministry of Interior and deployed on-board crews to monitor passenger behavior and issue fines for pollution.
